The
Sewell Music Conservatory was founded in 1952 by Mrs. Gladys S. Sewell, a Howard University graduate and acclaimed Piano and Music Educator.

The objective of the Conservatory was to offer a traditional music curriculum to beginners, as well as to those who wanted advance and progressive development of their music experience.

Due to her strong determination and perseverance, the School developed into one of Washington's most successful and prominent music conservatories, with an enrollment of more than 400 students weekly.

The New Sewell Music Conservatory, is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization under the direction of Harlan Jones, also a graduate of Howard University (with a concentration in Jazz Studies).  The conservatory is now geared to fit the needs and interest of today's music enthusiasts.

The program now includes, along with the traditional and contemporary curriculum, computer-aided musical learning systems, audio recording, record production, Jazz theory and choral arrangement.  Vocal training in gospel, jazz, new world, and rock are offered.  Classical music is taught as the technical foundation upon which popular and jazz music is built.

A specific musical approach is geared toward a progressive musical experience.  A pedagogy is developed to attract the interest of today's young people and this training coincides with real-life music.

At Sewell, our goal is
to bring out the music in you.
